This is a private reference service, not a government office. It cannot confirm whether someone is in custody, release a person, post bond, or pull an official booking record. The Sheriff’s Office, police department, court, or corrections agency that holds the record must answer those questions directly.
Where to Ask for a Record
Use the office that created or currently holds the record. The county jail’s custody entry and a city police incident report can be related, but they are not always the same file.
Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office
One Sheriff’s Plaza
Springfield, IL 62701
Main: 217-753-6880
FOIA and warrants: 217-753-6385
Corrections administration: 217-753-6763
Jail information: 217-753-6886 or 217-753-6887
Jail operations run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Corrections administration is listed as approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Written Requests
Use the Sheriff’s FOIA form for a booking record, booking photograph, arrest jacket, or dated custody information. The fee schedule states the available copy and media charges.
Illinois FOIA generally gives a public body five business days to respond, with a possible five-business-day extension. An arrest-report rule has separate timing and exemptions.
Call before visiting. Administrative hours and custody operations are different, and a live roster entry can change before a request is answered.
Choose the Right Lookup
These routes point to the records custodian for each common question.
- For a current county booking, photo card, booking number, or release field, begin with the Sangamon County roster and records path.
- For a wanted notice or a question about a specific warrant, use Most Wanted, the Sheriff’s Support Services line, and the Circuit Clerk docket route. A docket search is not warrant clearance.
- For a local incident report, use the relevant city page: Springfield, Chatham, or Sherman.
- For a case number, filed charge, hearing, or disposition, search the Sangamon County Circuit Clerk records.
- For a sentenced state prisoner, use the Illinois Department of Corrections offender search. IDOC is not the county jail roster.
- For federal custody, use the Bureau of Prisons locator. For immigration custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator.
